Situated in the uber trendy area of Clerkenwell, a hub of creative media agencies and repurposed industrial spaces, Foxlow is the neighbourhood restaurant bringing sustainable great British cuisine to the City.
Intermingled with some of London's most desirable eateries, Foxlow boldly occupies it's space in the local market, almost in a league entirely of its own. Headed up by Executive Chef, Lewis Hannaford, at Foxlow you are only a menu item away from pure delight and absolute satisfaction. I wasted no time getting nose deep into the cocktail menu.
Overwhelmed by choice, a very helpful staff member conducted a short survey. Asking me about my preferences and favourite spirits, before long the bar staff had conjured up a very sexy Gin cocktail. One sip and I was singing in perfect pitch, and it didn't stop there. After offering a very vague "somethin' sweet" to the waiter, he wasted no time in delivering easily one of the most scrumptious cocktails I've ever tasted. The 'Miami Dolphin' comes complete with a dolphin jelly sweet. It was sunset pink and deceivingly delish, making it tough to tell that the thing was packed full of potent rum. I wasn't complaining! How refreshing it was, to enjoy a cocktail within the "EC" London postcode range that actually had a solid dose of alcohol present in the glass! Before I slid under the table blissfully intoxicated, my starter arrived.
Salmon Crudo, a fresh and tangy dish, just the right amount to satisfy and not overwhelm and beautifully presented. It did what a starter should, engage your appetite just enough to make you really hungry for your main. I went with the Steak, Sirloin. I had high expectations, what with Foxlow being a part of the Hawksmoor family. Had it been poor, I would've had to torch the place. Luckily I was able to keep my matches and lighter fluid safely in my handbag, the steak was all that I had hoped it would be. A delicious cut of beef, massive and cooked to perfection. Accompanied by fries, mushrooms and the London Leaves side.
The darling waiter was kind enough to explain that the leaves in the salad are all locally sourced, a really nice touch. My dinner guest was a vegetarian and in my opinion a rather picky eater, so I was watching carefully to see how she navigated the menu. I was quietly thrilled to see her pick dishes she was actually excited to try. Foxlow's menu comes complete with some really gorgeous sustainable vegetarian and vegan options including a very gratifying Aubergine steak dish.
Overall I would recommend heading down to Foxlow for a first date where you're eager to impress with quality and display your fantastic taste but keen not to come across as pretentious. The moody lighting and attentive staff make for an ideal setting. It is also a delightful spot for dinner with a couple of friends who adore both cocktails and a very indulgent sticky toffee pudding.Foxlow.co.uk
