Clerkenwell is easily one of London's best treasure troves of delectable delights. Around every corner is a brand new little bistro or a snazzy eatery. Our latest favourite isn't new at all, a French spot that packs a hell of a punch on the food side whilst tugging at every possible heart string when it comes to family, heritage and history.
Founded by a Mr Charlie Graham-Wood in 1986 and named to reflect its proximity to Smithfield meat market, the restaurant is a local gem. The family warmth is tangible upon entering, we met with Sophie, daughter of Charlie who is now continuing her father's vision at Le Café du Marché. The loyal staff includes Head Chef, Antonio Pineda who has been with the restaurant for 20 years and recently stepping up to lead the kitchen. General managers Roberto Muscas and Carlos Ruiz and pastry chef, Keith Davies, who have also been part of the team since the late 1980s. A strong indication of a family run business with strong values and character.
Le Café du Marché can be found down a discrete cobbled mews in Smithfield. Two floors include character filled restaurant downstairs and a light-filled function area. Beautiful acoustics mean that music bounces off of the walls, making the upstairs area ideal for weddings and private parties. Authentic French cuisine and frequently updated seasonal à la carte menu features fresh and seasonal ingredients and ever-popular dishes such as la cote de boeuf with sauce béarnaise; braised beef bourguignon and celeriac puree; mousse au chocolat and classic French cheese.
