I found myself blown away by the profound beauty and sadness hidden in this unassuming illustration by Jeannie Phan.
"A father on his death bed gives his daughter a hundred dollar bill to spend as part of their norooz tradition. Years later, she’s still unable to use it, stuck in a spot dilemma and hope."
The artwork depicts the 100 dollar bill a loving father gave to his daughter just before he passed away. Written for the Globe and Mail, the story discusses some very deep themes around the death of a loved one and the existential misery that follows as a result. I suppose what I like most about this illustration is the vivid contrast between light and dark and this so perfectly sums up the tone of article and our universal experience of processing the loss of a loved one. We find ourselves enveloped in beautiful memories and distraught when we remember that the person we shared such precious moments with, is now gone.
