Surrealism, escapism and fantasy are three of the most central themes contributing to the otherness movement. The move towards these three themes indicate a higher desire for the extraordinary in a world of mass production and shortened attention spans. The developing presence of escapism, fantasy and surrealism also relate to humanity’s growing need for an alternative existence.
One of the many manifestations of the collective consciousness’s desire to dis- tance itself from the world’s series of seemingly insuppressible crises. Issues such as cruelty, acts of violence, financial lack and depletion of natural resources have driven many to seek out avenues of escape and other worldly existence. These themes have been spotted emerging most commonly within the design, art and luxury sectors.
